Who am I?

Hey there, welcome to my blog. My name is Sian, I’m 28, I live in Scotland and I have a chronic illness called M.E.  What is M.E.? M.E stands for myalgic encephalomyelitis. It is also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).  How long have I had ME?  I developed M.E 2 years ago at the start of September. I was about to start college to study beauty therapy and the day before I had a headache. Ok, no big deal, everyone has headaches. By the evening it had developed into a migraine (you know, when you can’t stand the light, or sounds, and you feel like you’re going to throw up). I didn’t think too much of it and hoped it would be gone by the morning. Well, it didn’t go. In fact, I had that same migraine constantly for 6 months straight.  What did you do?  I got on with it. I started college the next day, and I attended every day I was supposed to until I couldn’t handle it anymore, which was Christmas 2016.  What ...

My experience with CBD oil

CBD oils and products have become extremely popular in the last few years with more and more options springing up daily. So what is it?

CBD is one of 104 chemical compounds, known as cannabinoids, that can be found in the cannabis plant. It’s a naturally occurring substance, which can be extracted and mixed with a carrier oil to create CBD oil.

Unlike the most well-known cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive, meaning that it won’t make you ‘high’ – the sensation most commonly associated with cannabis. It is, however, reported to offer a range of health and medicinal benefits – the reason behind its growing acclaim. In the UK it is illegal to sell cannabis and CBD oils with THC in them. If you're unsure what the law is regarding cannabis and CBD in your country, it's best to do a little research first.

I did a fair bit of research before I took the plunge and tried it for myself, I discussed it with Denys and we looked at some websites to learn more before I considered taking it.

In the end, I went with Love CBD as it was stocked in a local health food shop, and their website was easy to navigate and looked professional. They also had plenty of information on their products and had a decent selection. You can sometimes find voucher codes for money off too.

I bought the Love CBD 250mg spray which was £19.99 plus delivery for 20ml. It comes with a spray top, instead of the usual dropper as these have been known to leak. You also get consistency with it, so each spray contains the same amount of oil. I started off slowly, I had one spray once a day for about five days, you spray it under your tongue and hold it there for a minute or two before you swallow the rest of the oil. After that, I increased it to one spray twice a day, then three times a day and eventually I was taking four or five sprays a day. The taste was quite mild, but there is a hint of a cannabis smell and taste. I think the oil I bought was a milder version taste wise, compared to their 'Entourage' and 'Dutch' oils. The only thing is that I was unable to see on their website if their products are all sativa strains, or if some are hybrids or indica strains. The general rule of thumb is that sativa is the standard strain, which some say has a slight invigorating effect and indica is more sedating and relaxing. A hybrid is a mixture of the two. By the time I finished the bottle I hadn't noticed any particular improvement in my symptoms so I decided to try a different brand.

I joined a few groups on Facebook about CBD and people using them for chronic illnesses, which is when I came across Simply CBD. I put an order in for their Liquid Gold oil with tumeric and black pepper. It came in a 30ml bottle with a dropper top for £15 plus delivery. This bottle did leak, and the oil itself is a luminous yellow colour due to the tumeric, which means that it stains anything it comes into contact with, i.e. hands, clothing, furniture etc. Even if you're very careful, it oozes out of the top of the bottle and only a small drop is enough to stain, so I would recommend that you hold the bottle with kitchen paper to avoid this happening, and make sure you sit it on something to protect your furniture. This means that it's difficult to carry on you as it can get messy.

I went straight from the Love CBD oil to the Liquid Gold so I didn't wean off the previous one, I started with three drops a day and went up to five a day. The oil also stains your teeth slightly so brushing afterwards is advisable. Sadly again, I didn't feel any effects from this oil, maybe they're too low a strength for me as my body has quite a high tolerance for medications, particularly pain meds and ones with a sedative effect. I finished the bottle and decided not to replace it with anything else.

I got a few samples from Cheds Oils, I received a small sample of their green paste, I tried it a few times but I decided to pass it on to someone else. I got some capsules which I haven't tried, they're whole plant extract hybrid and each capsule is 8.5mg. I was only given a few days worth, but I will try them next. I have been put off trying capsules as it tends to be a more expensive way of taking CBD oil, a month's supply on the lowest doses are usually about £20 plus delivery, plus I already take a lot of tablets.

I would like to try a higher strength CBD oil, and particularly an indica or hybrid strain, but they are more expensive and it's a gamble that hasn't paid off so far. I'll maybe try to save some money and give another product a go.

Have you tried any CBD products? Are there any that have helped you? Let me know in the comments section.

Thanks for reading.

Meet up with the local ME group

I’m tired... Today I met up with some fellow ME’ers for lunch. There is a Facebook group for my local area for anyone affected by ME. I attended a lunch date once before months ago, but I haven’t been able to go again until today.  I was pretty nervous walking into the restaurant as I didn’t know any of the members who would be there, so Denys walked in with me and got me to the group. I’m not as shy as I used to be, but it’s a bit intimidating being one person sitting there compared to most of them being a couple, but I think I did ok.  I realised that I’m lucky, yes I have pain everyday, sometimes I need to use a walking stick and I can’t work, but I sat next to a lady who is mostly wheelchair bound and can hardly eat due to stomach issues, and I heard about a lady who has been unwell with ME since she was a child. My heart aches for them, I know I am fortunate that I can move around my house most days, I can eat and socialise in small bites.  I lik...

Stupid ME

I have been looking forward to today all week, but once again ME ruins the party.  I woke up in pain and felt weak and shaky, I hoped it would ease off, instead it's just getting worse. We were supposed to be having a lunch date and then I would do some shopping, but when we got in the car I realised I wasn't going to feel better and so there was no point going out.  It feels as though my skeleton is shaking on the inside, and like I'm going to pass out or fall over with weakness. I spent an hour doing my hair and makeup just for it to go to waste. I don't often have the strength to put on makeup and go out so it was a big deal to me, but this cruel illness has taken the day away from me. It could have picked any other day this week to show up, any other day when I was already at home with no plans, but it chose today. Since becoming unwell, I have found myself wishing more and more days away, hoping for a good day, but with the good days come the bad days, ...

Dysphagia, Love CBD and Indica

I've recently had problems with swallowing; I can be eating or drinking and suddenly my body forgets how to swallow. I have been experiencing this late at night for a few months, but last week it leaked into the day, too. All three meals for two days were a real struggle. We use around fifty pairs of muscles and nerves to swallow, and it's mostly just an automatic thing, except for me it wasn't. I would try to initiate the swallow movement, but the food/drink wouldn't go down, and it would also block off my air supply, so I was unable to breathe. I would also not be able to swallow saliva. We went to see a GP as it was really distressing and I was becoming scared to eat, everytime I tried it would feel like my heart was in a vice, and that I was not going to be able to breathe again. I then started to have anxiety about eating or drinking anything, and I kept breaking down crying.  My GP has sent a referral to the upper GI (gastrointestinal) clinic...
